Artist and author Will James (1892-1942) is remembered for his life-like drawings and illustrated stories of authentic cowboy life in the American West. His books describe the people, places, animals, equipment, humor and ranch work done by real cowboys. He never allowed proper grammar or spelling to get in the way of his stories. James was born in Quebec in 1892, he left home at age fourteen, changed his name to William Roderick James, and headed west to pursue his dream of becoming a cowboy, first in Canada, then in the United States. In his early twenties, James was a top hand, admired for breaking tough mustangs, turning them into fine cow horses and was a popular, cheerful and a gifted story teller around the campfire.
